The “Former Detainees” faction of South Sudan’s ruling SPLM party have nominated their two ministers for the proposed transitional government of national unity.
They named former cabinet minister Deng Alor Kuol as minister of foreign affairs with former minister of youth, culture, and sports Cirino Hiteng as his deputy. John Luk Jok will be the minister of transport.
The Former Detainees comprise ten prominent SPLM politicians who were arrested by Salva Kiir’s government after the outbreak of war in December 2013. They were later released due to lack of evidence.
The Former Detainees received the foreign affairs and transport ministries as part of a compromise with other SPLM factions and political parties who are sharing power in the transitional government.
