Hunger in the Aweil area has hampered enrollment of schools, a local official told Radio Tamazuj.

The director of education for Aweil West County Peter Gop Koryom said that school enrollment has been effected by lack of food in the area. UN agencies have labled the region the hardest hit in the country from food shortages. Over thirty percent of South Sudanese are facing food insecurity, according to UN agencies.

“Our population is vulnerable,” Gop said, and added that some children from houses with malnutrition dropped out of school.

The director also said that 7 primary schools in the low lying areas have been completely inaccessible due to floods, which affects NGO activities in the region.

Gop also urged for the increase in teachers’ salaries and capacity building so that they can provide quality education.
