Authorities in the Greater Pibor Administrative Area (GPAA) report low stocks of food commodities at markets across the area following rainfall making it difficult to deliver goods.

GPAA Spokesman Sam David voiced concern over the shortages of food items across the region that started one month ago.

“We here in greater Pibor based on the security, we are doing fine and now the rain have started and people are on their farms and the major problem facing us in the region is the shortages of food items because the rain has stopped the traders bringing goods to the market. What we are using nowadays are the goods delivered since February and they are finishing,” Sam said.

He also said the market prices are too high for most people. The minister also pointed out that the Greater Pibor Administration never received its budget from the South Sudanese government, which has affected the whole county.

The information minister said the local government’s lack of budget contributed to food insecurity in northern GPAA including Pochalla. “If we had budget then the government should have solved the issue of food insecurity in the area,” he said.

The minister also said he had no information about he ‘letter of credit’ system, which the government uses to provide access to dollars preferred traders who are supposed to import goods to the country.
