Over 400 displaced households from South Sudan’s Unity state who sought refuge in Tonj North County in Warrap State following the fighting in the oil rich state are reportedly facing a deteriorating humanitarian situation in the county.
Speaking to Radio Tamazuj yesterday, the executive director of Tonj North County Mabior Acuil confirmed that over 2,000 displaced had arrived in the county, saying the displaced were experiencing shortages of food and shelter.
He noted the number of the displaced people stands at 400 families, according to recent assessment by the Relief and Rehabilitation Commission (RRC).
“You know, most of the displaced who have come here are women and children, I can assure you that they did not receive any assistance up till now,” he emphasized.
Their situation will definitely worsen in case they remain without help during the rainy season, Acuil said. The official appealed to the authorities concerned to distribute aid to the needy people in the county as soon as possible.
The administrator also stated that nearly 80,000 local residents in the state were affected by flooding. “The flood affected about nine administrative units in the county, so the citizens in those areas are in need of help,” he explained.
Meanwhile, a four-day polio vaccination campaign was expected to start today by targeting children who are under five years old in Tonj North County.
Speaking to Radio Tamazuj yesterday, the medical director of the Tonj North County, Dr. Albino Madut, said the polio campaign will kick off today across the payams in the county.
“The vaccination campaign targets children aged 1-59 months, so I urge all the parents to turnout so that they vaccinate their children who are under five years old,” he appealed.
