SPLA-IO forces at a cantonment site in Western Equatoria State lack food, shelter and medicine, a senior military official said on Thursday.

Gen. Alfred Futiyo, the SPLA-IO sector commander in the Western Equatoria region, told Radio Tamazuj that troops at a cantonment site in Sue area and those taken to Maridi County for training are facing a deteriorating humanitarian situation.

He said food at the cantonment site is insufficient for the troops.

The sector commander further advised the troops to cultivate crops as the rainy season approaches to avert a possible hunger outbreak.

The process of gathering government and opposition forces into training sites with a view to forming a unified army is a cornerstone of the 2018 peace agreement.
