The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UN OCHA) on Friday released an update on the number of people thus far affected by the floods in South Sudan.
“Heavy rains over the past weeks have caused flooding in most parts of the country affecting tens of thousands of people. So far, aid organizations have assessed almost 45,000 people to be in need of humanitarian assistance in Lakes (3,600), Northern Bahr el Ghazal (6,990), Upper Nile (15,150), Unity (1,073), Warrap (17,300) and Western Bahr el Ghazal (600) states,” the report states.
OCHA says that aid organisations are responding with food, household items, WASH (water, sanitation, and hygiene) and medical assistance based on assessed needs.
“Needs assessments are being conducted in other areas that are accessible where flooding has also been reported. Aid organizations face access challenges in attempts to reach people in some affected areas, due to limited road infrastructure and lack of logistics capacity”, the update concludes.
