Floods kill one in Wunyiik

Floods on Sunday killed one woman at Wunyiik village in Northern Bahr El Ghazal. The house was washed away by water while an elderly woman was inside. She was found dead early in the morning after the 11 hours rain.

The victim lived in a traditional house made out of thatch and grass supported by the poles of the tree.

Deng Malual, whose family’s three homes were destroyed in the flood, said “No one should be blamed in this situation because it's a natural. God gives and takes. But the only problem is that, everywhere is occupied with the water, the houses are fallen down, the latrines, no clean water to drink, mosquitoes bite even in daytime, and the grass grows taller and taller.

The state has formed a committee for disaster management to oversee humanitarian assistance to those affected by the flood. Molano Yel Atem, secretary for the committee, said the committee will report to the government and NGOs concerned to support the affected people with the blankets, vaccinations for the children and mosquito nets.

Damage to agriculture in the north-eastern part of the state is widespread, according to Wanyjok Commissioner Awet Kiir Awet. The continuous rains destroyed thousands of acres of groundnuts and sorghum, and affected 34,120 households, he said.

The flooding also cut off the road between Aweil and Warrap state via Akon County.
