Floods kill 5 in Bor town

Rising floods have claimed at least five lives in the Jonglei State capital, Bor, according to local authorities.

Rising floods have claimed at least five lives in the Jonglei State capital, Bor, according to local authorities.

Samuel Ateny Page, the head of the flood management taskforce in Jonglei, told Radio Tamazuj yesterday that five people, including two children, have been found dead in floodwaters since 28th October 2020.

“Floods became worse on the 28th of last month. Since then four people drowned in floodwaters, while on the 26th a house collapsed and a child was killed,” Ateny said.

Ateny blamed the deaths on the level of the rising floodwaters in the state. He advised Bor residents to take extra precautionary measures, saying more floods are likely in the coming weeks.

Joseph Mayen Akoon, the state police commissioner, also confirmed the incidents and urged Bor residents to be careful as floodwaters rise.

Last month, at least 10 people were reported to have died in floodwaters in Jonglei’s Ayod County, while two others drowned in the Duk area.
