Heavy floods killed at least 26 civilians, including 12 children, in Waat County of Bieh State in the past four weeks, a local official said.

Heavy floods killed at least 26 civilians, including 12 children, in Waat County of Bieh State in the past four weeks, a local official said.

Waat County Commissioner Isaac Pur Ruot told Radio Tamazuj last week that the flood victims died after their homes were submerged in floodwaters resulting from weeks of heavy rains.

“In Waat town, three women and three of their children died after their houses collapsed following heavy rains. In Rim area, seven people, including five children, were found dead as their mothers were in Pieri area to receive relief foods. In Wei-Deng area, three children drowned in water and four others, including two elderly women, were found dead on Thursday last week,” explained Ruot.

“Also, in Wunbil area, six people were killed after their house collapsed as it rained from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm,” he added.

Currently, about 4,000 residents are living in the open, without medical care, food and shelter, according to the local official.

“There are 68 cases of diarrhea and vomiting among children. There is a health facility here, but there are no medicines,” Ruot said.

The commissioner appealed to aid agencies in the area to urgently intervene.

Tut Gatkuoth Panom, the acting mayor of Waat town, said at least 16 people died within Waat municipality due to floods.
