Heavy floods from the Khor Achier stream in Renk County in Upper Nile State have destroyed homes leaving many people displaced, a local official and residents said.
The affected areas are Abayok, Hai Nasir, Hai Salam, Hai Thoura, Emitidad, Masarra, Hai Fur, and Jabarona.
Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Thursday, Renk County Commissioner Kak Padiet Kak said people in those flood-affected areas have moved to higher grounds and need humanitarian assistance.
“Many people have been affected and several houses were swept away by flood waters,” he said. “We are still assessing the damage but we have not received any reports of casualties so far.”
Commissioner Kak urged the state government and humanitarian organizations to assist the flood-affected people.
Meanwhile, Rania Stephen, a resident of the Abayok suburb, said her house had been submerged and other homes were washed away.
“The flooding has swept away our houses and our situation is very dire,” she said. “The flood has submerged Hai Salam and Abayok and blocked the roads making it difficult for people to move. Since yesterday, there has been no food or water and our children are suffering.”
For his part, Juma Ajang, a resident of Hai Salam, said his family has moved to higher ground.
“The situation is very dire and the flood has inundated the whole neighborhood and swept away the houses,” he said. “We have moved to higher ground.”
