Hundreds of families have been left homeless after floodwaters submerged parts of Terekeka County in South Sudan’s Central Equatoria State, a local official said.
Peter Lado Jelle, the County Executive Director, told Radio Tamazuj on Tuesday that the floods, which started in July, has left those displaced without food and shelter.
“People in areas like Gemeiza, Nyori, Mangalla North and Terekeka town have been displaced to higher ground. We are yet to get the exact number of the displaced, but the mentioned areas are worst hit,” said Lado.
He added, “Tali and Tindilo areas have been cut off from the rest of the county and now, there are shortages of goods.”
The local official disclosed that farmlands located along the Nile River have been submerged in floodwaters before harvest. He urged the government and aid agencies to urgently intervene.
Last month, South Sudan’s Relief and Rehabilitation Commission (RRC) warned that thousands of people displaced by floods and conflict could face serious food shortages if not supported.
In May, experts warned that most parts of South Sudan will be hard hit by floods from June to September.
