More than 46,000 people have been displaced and their crops destroyed by heavy floods in Mayom County of Unity state, authorities said.
The floods have affected Pup, Rialthiang and Riah payams in Mayom County of Unity State as torrential rains continue, County Commissioner Luke Chierye Riek said.
Riek confirmed to Radio Tamazuj Sunday the displacement of the 46,000 individuals, adding that their situation was worsening. He called for urgent humanitarian intervention.
“The situation of the people affected by heavy floods was worsening because most crops have been affected,” said the Commissioner.
Riek said they had conducted several meetings with RRC and NGOS to mitigate the situation.
“Our people are suffering from floods and we don’t have a way to support them, apart from providing the local dykes,” he said.
Radio Tamazju interviewed several victims and residents of Mayom over the weekend.
Jany Gatluak said their crops and livestock had been affected by the floods, with more than 500 farmers falling victims.
We were forced to leave the Puk, Rialthiang and Rihah payams to Ruthnyyaibol within Mayom County. The residents were now sheltering at the Ruthnyaibol,” said Gatluak.
The floodwaters have spread across three payams since September, he said, and appealed for additional excavators to construct dykes.
Nyaguini Kiel Gatjiak said the floods displaced him with his five children at night last week.
“Our home and properties were destroyed by the heavy floods,” Gatjiak said.
He appealed to the Unity State, the national government and NGOs to provide aid urgently.
The residents have called on the humanitarian organizations, the state, and the national governments to assist them with non-food items, including mosquito nets and other healthcare.
