Over 70 homesteads have been destroyed by flooding in Nzara County of Western Equatoria State after the Yubu River burst its banks leaving inhabitants exposed to the elements.
Speaking to Radio Tamazuj yesterday the coordinator for Relief and Rehabilitation Commission (RRC) in Nzara County, Gerusama Yoseke, said on the 31st of October River Yubu burst its banks due to heavy rains and destroyed homes near the river.
“The water that destroyed the houses in Nzara started on 31st October up to today. Many houses have were destroyed and the people displaced to their relatives’ residents and their condition is very bad. The exact number of houses destroyed is not clear but I can estimate 70 houses or more,” he said.
Yoseke said he had reported the issue to the State RRC coordinator but there was no response. He appealed to humanitarian organizations to support the affected people.
He added, “We need the humanitarians to come and see what has happened to the communities here so that they can intervene and support those people."
Some of the people affected by floods told Radio Tamazuj that they are left with nothing and requested urgent assistance.
Philemon Baiwo, a native of Nzara County said, “In our area in Hai Mherik and Konyokonyo our houses have been submerged and the water is still rising. We need tarpaulin and plastic sheets because all our possessions are now flowing in water.”
The areas affected by flooding are Hai Konyokonyo, Hai Mherik, Hai Matar, and Dahr Dukan in Nzara County.
