An official in South Sudan’s Jonglei State says torrential rains have destroyed several houses and farms in Duk Padiet and Duk Panyang areas.
Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Friday, James Yien Jal, Duk Pagak county commissioner said parts of Duk Padiet and Duk Panyang areas were flooded as it kept raining for several days since June 7.
“In Duk Padiet, Dorok, Amiel, Ayinko, and Akuei are lowland areas. So those areas are over flooded. According to the report I got, 160 houses collapsed and over 50 goats died. Now people want to be move to higher ground areas in Dud Padiet Centre,” he said.
He also pointed out that farms in Duk Panyang and parts of Duk Padiet were submerged in waters.
Yien warned of deteriorating situation of the locals, saying hunger may hit greater Duk areas if there is no humanitarian assistance.
Meanwhile, Atong Kuol Manyang, the state information minister confirmed that heavy rains were reported in parts of greater Duk, adding the torrential rains have cutoff the area.
