Floods destroy crops, displace families in Pochalla

Farmers in Pochalla County of South Sudan’s Greater Pibor Administrative Area are counting losses after heavy floods destroyed their crops.

Residents said the floods started after Akobo River broke its banks. They further said the floods spilled into the villages and displaced residents.

Rebecca Atin, a displaced resident, said they currently live in the open after her home submerged in the floodwaters.

“These floods started in Okadi and Obuodi areas. Now, in Pochalla town, the floods reached us,” Rebecca said. “Our livelihoods have been destroyed. There is no food.”

Jay Ojari, another resident of Okadi neighborhood, said he lost all his crops to the floodwaters.

“The level of the water comes up to a person's knees. Residents and the king of Okadi stay in the school. There will be no food in the coming months.”

Ochalla Okello, a farmer in Pochalla, appealed to the government and aid agencies to support the flood-affected families in the area.

Ochudho Ochan, the acting Pochalla county commissioner, said more than 5, 000 homes had been destroyed by floods in Okadi, Adongol, Obuodi and Pochalla areas.

The local official appealed for humanitarian intervention.
