Authorities in South Sudan’s Twic South County of Jonglei state say floods caused by heavy rains have made the areas inaccessible by roads, cutting off supplies.
Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Wednesday, Daniel Deng Manyok, Twic South County commissioner said weeks of heavy rains rendered roads leading to his county impassable and caused food shortage in the town.
“We were cut off since the start of June. No roads leading to Twic, so there are no trucks coming. Goods are rare in the markets and their prices increased. Now, a sack of sugar increased to 12,000 from 10,000, and that of flour to 9,000 from 7,000 while 20 liters of oil increased to 7,000 from 5,500,” he explained.
He added, “No drugs will reach us through roads until the road dries. And now cases of diarrhea are on the rise. As of Wednesday, we had registered 123 cases of diarrhea”.
The county official also pointed out that the heavy downpours destroyed several houses in Patiou, Nomlau and Marial areas, leaving more than 400 families homeless while adding that farms were also submerged in water.
Deng is appealing to aid agencies operating in the country to intervene by assessing the affected areas and help the needy families.
During the rainy season, Greater Twic areas in Jonglei State often become impassable by road.
