Flooding hinders farming in Abyei area

Mario Kuol, managing supervisor of the Abyei Area Adminstration in the disputed area between Sudan and South Sudan, says that flooding has affected this year’s planting season.

Mario Kuol, managing supervisor of the Abyei Area Adminstration in the disputed area between Sudan and South Sudan, says that flooding has affected this year’s planting season.

Citizens are suffering badly owing to flooding and poor roads, which affected the flow of goods into the area, according to the official.

He stressed that this year’s agricultural season has been affected by the flooding, adding locals will definitely face hunger.

On security matters, Kuol told Radio Tamazuj on Thursday that he held a meeting with the leadership of the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA) to discuss new security plans to protect local residents in the area.

“We don’t want any attack again on the Abyei natives by militias supported by the Sudanese government,” he said.

Kuol explained that the UN forces have already shut down the corridors used by the pro-government militia into Abyei.
