About 500 flood victims in Nzara County of Western Equatoria State are appealing for humanitarian aid after recent heavy rains caused flooding and destruction in their area.
Last week, heavy rainfall caused River Yubu to burst its bank and inundate parts of the county causing massive destruction.
Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Tuesday, some victims appealed for humanitarian assistance, especially food and shelter.
“My name is Emmanuel Elia, our things have been destroyed and we are suffering now. We don't have bed sheets, saucepans, and all household utensils, we don't even have a place to sleep, we are suffering. We appeal for help especially for our children who can easily be affected by diseases because of the cold," Elia appealed.
Zanga Natalia, a mother of a three-month-old baby says she now sleeps on the wet ground with her baby after all her belongings were swept away by the floods.
“We give thanks to the people who came to visit us with the challenges we are facing because water came and destroyed our houses and we are left with nothing. The heavy rains came when I was in the garden and took all my properties from me including my mattress. So I need shelter, where we can stay,” she appealed.
Meanwhile, Western Equatoria State Governor Alfred Futuyo Karaba promised to support the flood victims.
“Condolences to the people of Nzara for what happened because we heard that water destroyed their houses. As the government, we have heard and we have sent the minister to carry the assessment and registration so that we can see what we can do about it,” the governor said.
According to Nzara County Commissioner Richard Zizi, they have so far registered 60 households whose homes were destroyed by the floods.
