As floodwaters subside in parts of Unity State, officials say the flood-displaced communities are slowly returning to their homes.

Most parts of Unity state have been underwater following months of devastating floods that destroyed lives and livelihoods.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj over the weekend, Mayiendit County Commissioner Dr. Gatluak Nyang said they are witnessing a return of displaced communities although still at a low pace.

“The water level is somehow decreasing but the flooding is still there,” he said. “Yes, very few numbers of people who have been submerged by flooding are returning slowly into their villages in Mayiendit County.”

He added, “But most of them are here in Rubkuay and other places in Gannhial, Thaker.”

According to Nyang, there are no humanitarian activities taking place in the region for now following the Christmas festivities but he hopes they will soon resume in the coming weeks to support the vulnerable communities.
