At least five people were injured at a protest within the UN Protection of Civilians site in Malakal on Tuesday and several others fainted when teargas was used by UN peacekeepers.

Several internally displaced persons (IDPs) told Radio Tamazuj that the incident occurred when displaced people protested against a decision by the UN peacekeepers to close a market within the UN base, prompting the UN peacekeepers to use tear gas.

At least five people were injured and several others fainted as a result of confrontations at the scene of the protest.

The UN peacekeepers reportedly decided to close the market to avoid further inter-communal clashes within the camp, but some of the camp residents rejected the decision, prompting protest against the decision.

Several eyewitnesses said the situation returned to normal by yesterday afternoon. They also said there is concern that protests could be reorganized by the IDPs.
