At least five people including a police officer drowned after flooding and heavy rains hit Tonj South and Tonj North counties in South Sudan’s Warrap state Saturday.

At least five people including a police officer drowned after flooding and heavy rains hit Tonj South and Tonj North counties in South Sudan’s Warrap state Saturday.

Tonj North information official Santino Mabeny told Radio Tamazuj that the two areas had witnessed heavy rains resulting in rising rivers.

He said the incident took place when the five persons tried to cross the Agor River which divides Tonj North with Tonj South.

“So the five people including a First Lieutenant in Prison Service drowned instantly due to the ferocity of the current,” he said.

Mabeny expressed concern that the Agor River is still rising and could affect movement of local residents in the two counties.
