At least five people were killed, two others wounded and more than 200 cows raided in South Sudan’s Lakes State last Friday, a community leader disclosed.

The incident reportedly occurred in Pakuchciek of Yirol East County.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Tuesday, the county’s executive chief, Thon Dhuor said armed youth from Panyijiar County of Unity State carried out the raid.

He identified those killed as Kot Makur, Deng Malith, Matur Madit, Thon Maciek and Maciek Makur. “We are calling on authorities in Panyijiar County to return all the cattle taken by the raiders,” said Thon.

According to the community leader, a peace and reconciliation dialogue planned between the two areas was canceled due to Friday’s raid.

Authorities in Panyijiar could not immediately be reached for comment.

Cattle are a main source of wealth for many communities. Since South Sudan’s independence in July 2011, cattle raids and revenge attacks have claimed several lives.
