At least five children died of malaria in Duk Pagak County of Jonglei State amidst a rise in the cases of the disease, a local official said.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Wednesday, James Yien Jal, the county commissioner said the deaths were reported since the beginning of October as malaria cases rise due to floods.

“The county is flooded again. The floodwaters came from Boma areas. Now, the population of the county is complaining of malaria since the drugs that were supplied are not adequate,” he explained.

He added, “Within this month, 5 children died of malaria and at least 10, 000 households in Panyok and Chindiir areas are affected by floods. Those affected have moved to the headquarters of the county.”

The official is appealing for relief aid saying the locals need food, shelter, and medicine.
