A fisherman was killed and two others wounded by unknown gunmen in Tonj South County of Warrap State, a local official said.
The incident happened along Tonj River on Sunday.
Gabriel Awan Makuoch, the Secretary General of the defunct Tonj State condemned the attack and vowed to apprehend the perpetrators.
“Yesterday [Monday] at around 4 pm, attackers suspected to be from Thony community attacked fishermen along the river east of Tonj town. One person was shot dead and two wounded,” he said.
Awan advised fishermen to be vigilant while carrying out their activities along Tonj River, saying their safety should be prioritized.
“I advise the public, especially fishermen who normally go to the riverside for fishing that the surrounding environment is not conducive,” he said.
He urged the fishermen to carry out their activities in secure places.
