First anniversary of killing of five journalists in South Sudan

Monday marks the one year anniversary of the killing of five journalists in Raja county of South Sudan’s Western Bahr el Ghazal state.

On Sunday, 25 January 2015, unknown gunmen opened fire on a two-car convoy carrying the Commissioner of Raja County James Benjamin and journalists of Raja Radio and South Sudan TV/Radio Wau branch, killing eleven people total. A child and a woman were among the dead.

The government of Western Bahr al Ghazal accused a group loyal to the rebel leader Riek Machar of the attack and formed an investigation committee into the incident. However, the results of the investigation have never been released.

The Union of Journalists of South Sudan and the Association for Media Development in South Sudan called on Western Bahr el Ghazal authorities to release the report of the investigation committee.

A source expects a mourning service by journalists for their late colleagues later this day.
