Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Sunday morning, several traders said property valued at millions was razed to the ground after fire destroyed six shops.

Ali Issa, a Sudanese businessman who sales motorbikes and spare parts, said he lost all his goods.

“I learned of it at about 7 pm. But after I reached the scene, I found fire had already destroyed all my goods worth over 2,000,000 SSP. I also lost my passport,” he said.

Businessman Sheikh Osman Ahmed said he suffered losses worth 4,000 US dollars after the huge fire destroyed his shop, adding that it will be difficult for him to restart the same business.

 “We don’t know how the fire started, we were helped by water tankers. All my goods are gone,” he lamented.

The businessmen appealed to the national government to support them. They also urged the government to equip fire fighters in case of any fire outbreak in the future.

For his part, Major Daniel Majak, the police spokesperson in Jonglei said an investigation into the incident is ongoing, adding that the cause of the fire remains unclear.
