Intercommunal clashes over the weekend erupted in Greater Pibor Administrative Area’s (GPAA) Nanaam area, according to the area’s information minister.
Abraham Kelang, the GPAA information minister, told Radio Tamazuj Monday that the clashes involving armed youth allegedly from Jonglei State and those in GPAA commenced Sunday evening.
“On Sunday at 4 pm, armed youth we believe came from Duk and Ayod counties in Jonglei State attacked Nanaam,” he said. “Fighting has been going on in Rang village since Sunday until Monday evening.”
Minister Kelang said the fighting may escalate as the aggressors are still within GPAA territory.
“Details of the casualties are unclear because there is no telephone communication network,” he added. “On Monday evening, the attacking youth withdrew from Rang but they are still in our territory.”
Meanwhile, Duk County Commissioner Both Peter Latjor Chuol and his Ayod County counterpart, James Chuol Jiek, said they were not aware of the clashes in GPAA and that their youth had not left their territories.
