Former President of Botswana Festus Mogae will convene another meeting of the Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission in December, according to a press statement by the commission. He chaired the inaugural meeting of the commission on Friday in Juba.
The former president on Friday observed a moment of silence in memory of those who have lost their lives in the conflict. During a speech afterwards at the launch of the monitoring commission, Mogae said that the time has come for implementation of the peace agreement signed in August.
The commission announced on Saturday the success of the inaugural meeting of the JMEC, saying it was attended by government representatives, the SPLM Former Detainees as well as religious leaders, women’s bloc, civil society organizations, the business community and youth, as well as representatives of the regional guarantors of the peace deal, among others.
Rebel group SPLM-IO did not attend the meeting but announced the following day that they welcomed the launch of the Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission in Juba.
