Female prison guards in Jonglei have salaries cut for male colleagues

Female prison wards in Jonglei State will receive only half their salaries when payments resumes, according to an effected employee. The prision service will use the money to buy guns for the women and pay male government workers, the employee said.

“You have no guns and these men have guns to do the work of the prison more effectively than you. Do you think they will work without payment? The government does not have money yet, it is you to share with them next month,” said Gen Manyang Agok, director of the state prision service, according to a female prision guard.

There are roughly 2000 female prision guards and around 700 unpaid induviduals, according to the worker.

Around 400SSP  has been taken from the female prision salaries, according to the worker.

Local leaders have reportedly objected to the policy.

Gen Agok was not immediately available to comment.
