Residents of Magar, Nyiel, Malual Riba, Miyom Ngok and Nyangoong villages in Rummamer County in the disputed territory of Abyei have expressed their concerns over rampant insecurity, especially at night.
The villagers told Abyei Today that unknown armed people have been moving at night looking for cattle and other valuable properties, appointing to the death of Michar Anyil, an old man whose cows were also raided in Nyiel last March.
Traditional leaders of the five villages called upon Rummamer County authorities to deploy more community police officers.
Deng Makuei, chief of Both Magar and Nyiel, said they fear when moving at night since the killing of Michar Anyil. “We want security to be tightened here at night,” he said.
Maluk Lual, who is the head of community police in Magar, said they have received several complaints of suspicious activities and movement at night. He further they are carrying out patrols but haven’t yet identified any criminal activities.
