The Forestry Department in Fashoda County in South Sudan’s Upper Nile state complained about cutting trees by internally displaced persons and Nuba Mountain refugees.

Fashoda Director of Forestry John Dak expressed concern Monday over what he termed “unjust cutting down of trees.”

Dak said authorities are trying to protect forests and educate refugees and IDPs on the importance of trees as a natural resource.

However, he said a significant damage has already taken place owing to irresponsible logging.
