The former governor of South Sudan’s Aweil state said he would do the best he could to enlighten the communities to embrace farming, stressing that it was the only way to fight hunger and turn the region into the food basket.
“My obsession is to provide food and jobs to people in Aweil state, Northern Bahr el Ghazal region. I spent the last few days processing sorghum at our farm at the outskirt of Aweil town,” Ronald Ruay Deng said in a statement on Sunday, after visiting his farm outside Aweil town.
“The region is primarily an agricultural area; food security tops the priority. Finding a safe, affordable and plentiful supply of food should be a national security issue after the end of the senseless war,” he added.
“We need to use our energies instead of fighting each other, to invest in agriculture and improve the livelihood of our people. Let us rise to be the food basket for Africa and not the basket case itself.”
