The family of Lake State MP and ex-Information Minister Mariik Nanga Mariik is demanding that their son be given his legal rights including the right to know the charges against him and the right to a trial.

Marik Nanga representing Rumbek North County and Makur Buoch representing Rumbek East County were taken for questioning on 25 October. It was reported that they were detained on the orders of military caretaker governor Maj-Gen Matur Chut Dhuol and are being held at an unknown location.

The arrests followed the fighting between youth and the organized forces in Rumbek North County.

Marik’s family members say they are concerned about their son and not sure where the state security have taken him.

“Our worry is that people said he is in Yirol and we don’t know now whether he was killed or alive because we are going for almost three weeks now and it is not known where they state government has placed them,” said relative Baar Biong.

Baar told Radio Tamazuj that Marik was detained for no reason because if there were charges they should have been known and he should faces charges in court.

Lakes State Minister of Information Dhieu Wal could not be reached for comment.
