About 1,500 people are seeking shelter in Lankien town of Nyirol County in Jonglei State after floods destroyed their homes and livelihoods.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj Tuesday, Bol Makuey, the Nyirol County commissioner, said close to 1,500 people in parts of the county have been displaced to Lankien town while many others are stranded in floodwaters since last week.

“Thol Payam to the northern boundary has been evacuated. 1,000 people from there are with me in Lankien without food and shelter. Bir village of Pultruk Payam has also been destroyed by floods. Some people have also fled while others remain stranded. Other parts of the county are also affected but we do not have statistics," commissioner Bol said.

He called on the aid agencies operating in the country to intervene, by assessing the flood victims and providing the much-needed aid.

For his part, John Nyang Chot, the Nyirol Relief and Rehabilitation Commission (RRC) director, also decried the dire situation of those affected and called on the relevant aid agencies to provide food, shelter, and medicines.
