Families of the victims from the Rizeigat-Ma’alia clashes in East Darfur are demanding that the state pays them blood money “as committed by the Governor”.

In an interview with Radio Tamazuj, Al Omda Basil Mohamed Al Haj accused Mr Mahmud Musa Madibo of failing to form an ad hoc committee “to collect blood money from the Rizegat tribe.”

He stressed that the Abu Haraz and Babanusa peace conferences held in 2009 recommended the payment of blood money for the families of victims of tribal wars.

The leader of Ma’alia noted that the East Darfur Governor Abdel Hamid Kasha promised the Abu Jabra commissioner to pay blood money for the fallen victims after Eid el Adha (Feast of Sacrifice).

The families of victims are calling upon the government to fulfill its commitment to them pay blood money compensation.

Unamid says that “tensions between the Rizeigat and Ma’alia were reportedly triggered by unresolved disputes concerning access to land resources.
