Ten months into South Sudan’s civil war, over 96,000 civilians remain under peacekeeper protection at UN bases throughout the country, according to the UN Mission in South Sudan.

95% of the civilians in the UN bases are in Bentiu, Malakal, and Juba. There are 47,214 people in Bentiu, 28,010 people in Juba, and 17,119 people in Malakal.

Other towns with civilians seeking safety under the UN are Wau, Melut, Nasser, and Rumbek. Twenty four people were sheltering in Renk but recently left.

Civilians fled to the UN bases for fear of being targets of racial or ethnic killings by soldiers outside. All UN bases where civilians are sheltering are in areas controlled by forces allied with President Salva Kiir.
