The health coordinator of the Catholic Diocese of Wau, Dr. Jurel Payee Mamur, said a 16-day eye treatment campaign that started on Monday is targeting 2,000 eye cataract patients.
He said patients are being screened for cataract surgical operations.
“The eye campaign will continue for 16 days and we are expecting to operate 2,000 patients with cataracts and we are screening 200 patients out of 700 in the Out Patient Department daily,” he said. “There are more than 100 eye diseases, so we are tackling the cataract this time, but we offer some drugs for other eye infections.”
An old woman identified as Ayak Lual who has been blind for the last ten years said she will be overjoyed to regain her sight after being operated at the Aweil Civil Hospital in Northern Bahr el Ghazal State.
“I have been suffering for the last 10 years since I was bewitched to lose my sight and I hope to regain my sight,” she stated.
Another blind man called Garang Garang who hails from Warrap State’s Gogrial West County said he has not been able to see for three years and hopes to regain his sight.
“I have spent three years without seeing anything and my only hope is to get healed again so that I will work and provide for myself,” he said.
Germany International Cooperation and South Sudan National Ministry of Health are among the partners facilitating the eye campaign.
