Anthony Bol Madut, the former governor of South Sudan’s Tonj State, has died in Egypt this morning at the of age of 78.

Anthony Bol Madut, the former governor of South Sudan’s Tonj State, has died in Egypt this morning at the of age of 78.

Madut had sought treatment in South Africa and Kenya before going to Egypt.

The State Information Minister William Wol told Radio Tamazuj this afternoon that the former governor had developed kidney complications that led to his hospitalisation in the Egypt capital, Cairo.

“The former governor died in Cairo on 25 August. He was suffering from kidney complications,” William said, adding that the former governor died while receiving treatment.

The state minister said arrangements are underway to bring the body back home for burial.” The body will be buried at Freedom Square in Tonj. The family and the state government have agreed to bury the body in Tonj,” he said.

General Anthony Bol Madut served as governor of Tonj state from February 2018 to January 2019.
