Former caretaker governor of South Sudan's Northern Bahr el Ghazal state Akot Deng Akot has passed on.
General Akot died on Friday in the Sudanese capital Khartoum where he was undergoing medical treatment.
The community of greater Aweil mourned the passing of General Akot Deng Akot, former caretaker governor of Northern Bahr el Ghazal before President Salva Kiir created more states.
Gen. Santino Deng Wol, commander of the ground forces, said the death was a loss for the country. Wol described General Akot as "a person who served the country with commitment, loyalty and patriotism ".
Kom Kom Geng, a member of the national legislative assembly, expressed regret at the passing of Akot Deng Akot, saying the country has lost a citizen who will be remembered for his commitment.
Akot was the third caretaker governor of Northern Bahr el Ghazal. He followed the acting caretaker Salva Chol Ayat, who succeeded Kuel Aguer Kuel.
General Akot was appointed as caretaker governor by President Kiir in August 2015.
He previously served in various positions in South Sudan’s police. He was promoted to the rank of lieutenant general in the police service and appointed as assistant inspector general for operations. He served in the position until he was put on a reserve list from the active police service.
