Ex-army chief turned rebel leader forms executive committee

South Sudan’s former army chief and leader of South Sudan United Front (SSUF), General Paul Malong Awan announced on Monday the formation of a national executive committee after conducting a leadership and command meeting.

The committee is the highest structure since the movement’s formation in April 2018.

Former Lakes State deputy governor, David Nok Marial is the movement’s secretary general and also heads the defence and security affairs committee while Justice Malek Mathiang Malek will oversee the legal affairs and constitutional development committee.

The new structure also saw the former Lol State deputy governor, Lual Dau Marach named secretary for foreign affairs and diplomacy.

While Sunday de John was assigned the committee for communication and information and the committee responsible for finance and economic affairs was allocated to Peter Akoon Maluil.

The former Lol state information minister, Omer Ishag will head the education, science and technology committee whereas Nyamach Nyang Chol was named the movement’s head of gender, social welfare and the deputy secretary for external affairs and diplomacy.

SSUF’s new structure saw Thomas Lino Kulang tasked to head the committee for training, research and planning while Manyok Abraham Thuc will head the syndicated organization committee.

Meanwhile, the ex-undersecretary in the foreign affairs ministry, Joseph Ayok Anei heads the secretariat for health while Mario Malong Deng heads the humanitarian and emergency relief docket.

Others appointed were Jangyang Gatjiath Thoat (agriculture and commerce), James Kuol Deng (deputy head of political affairs and mobilization), Angelo Dhieu Ariik (deputy head of education, science and technology) and Makoi Majak Luk (students’ league).
