The European Union Special Envoy for the promotion of freedom of religion, Jan Figel has met with Sudanese parliamentarians over the situation of Christians and the demolition of some churches.

In a press statement after the meeting on Thursday, the Chairman of the Legislation and Justice Committee at Sudan’s National Legislative Assembly, Ahmed al-Tijani, said the European envoy posed questions about the demolition of some churches in the country.

Al-Tijani pointed out that the legislators told him that the freedom of belief is stipulated in the country’s constitution and that the state does not impose any religious belief or practice on its citizens.

Al-Tijani added that the MPs explained that the churches have been demolished because of a dispute over land ownership.
