The European Union while applauding South Sudanese parties to the revitalized peace agreement for recommitting to the deal signed last month, has called on the parties to immediately observe the ceasefire agreement signed in December 2017.

A statement by EU after the peace celebrations in Juba on Wednesday stated that although the initial steps towards implementation are going in the right direction, there is still fighting in parts of the country.

“It is important that all parties immediately observe the provisions of the Cessation of Hostilities Agreement of December 2017 and disengage and separate their forces in close proximity as agreed by them. Full and unimpeded humanitarian access throughout the country is equally paramount,” the statement reads in part.

The EU also urged South Sudanese authorities to uphold justice and accountability in the 5-year civil war saying recent reports have documented grave human rights violations committed in South Sudan.

“We expect all parties to hold perpetrators of violence to account, and ensure that transitional justice and accountability mechanisms are in place for the people of South Sudan.”

EU further reiterated its continued commitment to support the region and the people of South Sudan towards peace, reconciliation, stability, and resilience.
