EU announces €30 million in aid for South Sudan

The European Union on Thursday announced a donation of 30 million Euros to support ongoing efforts to help the most vulnerable people in South Sudan.

The European Union on Thursday announced a donation of 30 million Euros to support ongoing efforts to help the most vulnerable people in South Sudan.

The funding, the European Union said, comes as part of the Commission's seven adopted new programmes and additional funds for Horn of Africa, worth €99.5 million.

It further said the new funds for South Sudan are for increased access to primary and secondary education for children in remote areas (€15 million) and access to health services, including nutrition services, especially for pregnant women and children under five (€15 million).

"The Horn of Africa has an unprecedented opportunity to shore up peace and stability throughout the region. The nearly €100 million we have approved will support vulnerable communities, contributing therefore directly to that peace and stability," said Commissioner for International Cooperation and Development, Neven Mimica.

The European Union Ambassador to South Sudan Dr Sinead Walsh welcomed the announcement of the new funds. "The EU supports health and education because we believe these are crucial to the future of the peace process and to develop opportunities for a better future whereby citizens of South Sudan  can overcome inequalities, poverty and deprivation of fundamental rights," she said.

The EU is a major donor of humanitarian aid in South Sudan, which is considered one of the most dangerous places in the world for humanitarian organizations.
