The Ethiopian Federal Police on Monday released renowned Sudanese political activist Hisham Ali, commonly known as Wad Galiba, after one day in detention.
In an exclusive statement to Radio Tamazuj, Wad Galiba revealed that the arrest occurred while he and his son were at a local market in Addis Ababa. His apprehension was carried out by four individuals, including Sudanese nationals, who informed him that he was wanted for questioning.
Wad Galiba, renowned for his political stances and human rights activism, has garnered significant attention due to audio recordings of several Sudanese government officials. He is also well-known for his prominent role in protest movements advocating for democratic reforms and his influential “The Devil Series” which sparked widespread controversy.
“The group of four, including Sudanese nationals, took me to the Lideta Police Station,” Wad Galiba narrated. “After the initial questioning, I learned that the investigation was prompted by complaints filed against me by Mohammed Osman regarding The Devil Series I published on social media.”
He explained that he was taken to court where no action was taken and he was sent back into custody. Following the preliminary inquiry, he was detained and then released on personal bail.
The police requested his presence on Tuesday morning to complete the legal procedures.
