Ethiopia's prime minister arrived in Khartoum on Friday to meet the head of Sudan's military council and opposition representatives, days after the killing of dozens of protesters by security forces. 

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed arrived in Khartoum this morning to revive talks, state news agency SUNA reported.

The Ethiopian leader was received at Khartoum Airport by Lieutenant General Shams El Din Kabbashi, the military council’s spokesman.

Mr Abiy, whose trip comes after the African Union suspended Sudan's membership on Thursday, was expected to hold separate talks with the ruling military council, headed by Gen Adel Fattah Al Burhan, and with leaders of the Forces for the Declaration of Freedom and Change, a broad coalition of opposition parties behind the popular uprising.

The two parties had been negotiating for a transition to a civilian-led interim government but talks stalled after security forces raided the main protest camp outside the military headquarters in Khartoum on Monday.

The opposition says 113 people were killed in the attacks. The government said the death toll stood at 61.

The AU Peace and Security Council suspended Sudan until the establishment of civilian rule, intensifying international pressure on the army generals to hand over power.
