Erratic garbage collection leaves Juba markets dirty

Traders in Konyo-Konyo are complaining about a lack of garbage pick up from areas near their stalls, worrying that it is making the market dirty and unhygienic.

Akello, a Ugandan woman who sells fruit, said she has followed the proper procedures to have the garbage collected. “We usually buy the empty sacks to put in the waste and put it besides the road so that the garbage trucks will collect it,” she said. Then they are required to pay the garbage collectors, who are organized by the city council.

Mohamed Ali, a Darfurian selling clothes, said, “We were assured by city council earlier to collect our garbage in good place for collection.”

There are also complaints in Gudele and Jebel markets that the city council is not doing a good job collecting garbage.
