An Eritrean truck driver working for the road construction company, African Resource Corporation (ARC), was last week arrested in Rumbek, Lakes State, for knocking a woman dead.

The driver identified as Aroun Abdelmariem knocked and killed Mary Aluar Bol at 1 pm in Abeer village near Rumbek town last Thursday.

The traffic police investigator Rumbek, Peter Makoi, told Radio Tamazuj over the weekend that the lady was being carried on a motorcycle from Rubek town to Cueicok when the accident occurred. He said the truck driver was remanded at the Rumbek Central Prison.

“The lady was traveling on a bodaboda to Cueicok while the ARC vehicles were working on the road between Abeer and Cueicok,” he said.

According to Makoi, the lady fell off the motorcycle and the truck crushed her head killing her on the spot while the rider sustained minor injuries.

“The vehicle which killed her belongs to the company that is repairing the Bahr el Ghazal road network between Rumbek and Cueibet County. When I went to the scene of the accident, there was no traffic police officer to guide passengers’ movements on the road,” he said. “It seems ARC has not requested for traffic police officers to guide the movement of passengers on the road and yet the road very busy.”

Makoi said the body of the deceased was last Friday taken to the village in Cueicok for burial after a postmortem in Rumbek hospital.
