Equatoria governors urge Riek and Kiir to respect peace deal

Governor of Central Equatoria State Maj Gen. Clement Wani Konga has called on both leaders President Salva Kiir and former Vice President Riek Machar to commit themselves to implement the peace deal signed last Friday.

Speaking on Monday at a news conference in his office on behalf of all three governors of Equatoria states, Konga welcomed the agreement as a ‘bold action’ by the two leaders to bring peace.

He said now the leaders who signed the peace agreement must disengage from hostile activities, saying South Sudanese must rally behind the president in order to implement the peace agreement.

He also urged Riek Machar to honour the agreement to allow the citizens of South Sudan to live in peace and be able to cultivate, pointing out that children and mothers especially have suffered because of the ward and the lack of food.

The leader pointed out that power struggles could be solved peacefully through elections.

Konga further denied insinuations from some quarters that the recent three Equatoria conferences pointed to a resurgence of kokora – a term sometimes used to refer to Equatorian particularism or separatism.

But he emphasized that the people of the region rejected to become part of any ‘senseless’ conflict. “We as the People of Equatoria… we came out that we will not support, and will not let the land of Equatoria to be used for senseless wars,” Konga said.
