In Eastern Equatoria State, 167 joint forces have been deployed to address crime during the Christmas and New Year festival, according to police authorities. The deployment period spans from December 20th to January 2nd, 2024.
“The security organs of Eastern Equatoria State, chaired by Governor Louis Lobong Lojore, convened to formulate a security plan for the upcoming Christmas and New Year celebrations. This comprehensive plan covers a 12-day period, commencing on December 20th and concluding on January 2nd, 2024, aligning with the culmination of the New Year festivities. A joint force consisting of 167 members from various security organizations has been assembled to oversee the security arrangements,” Maj. Gen. James Monday Enoka said during an interview with Radio Tamazuj.
“These forces will be strategically positioned at celebration venues, entry points, and engaged in patrol activities. Additionally, escort forces have been mobilized to contribute to the overall security measures. The deployment commenced December 20, and the forces are actively working day and night. Observers may notice the movement of these forces both on foot and in vehicles,” explained Maj. Gen. James Monday Enoka.
He stated, “The purpose of this plan is to ensure a safe and peaceful celebration of Christmas and the New Year. Our message to the public is that they can be confident in the security situation; there is thorough preparation for protection. We encourage everyone to enjoy the celebration in a peaceful manner. Our specific request is that there be no shooting of guns into the air during the festivities. We urge people not to use firearms for celebration, but rather to express their joy in alternative ways. Additionally, we ask for cooperation with security forces and encourage the public to promptly report any incidents to the security personnel deployed throughout the town. The entire town, including markets and public spaces, will be secure. We wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year.”
When questioned about whether the deployed number would suffice for the extensive state, he reassured that all security organs are actively on duty and prepared to respond to any unforeseen circumstances. He emphasized that unlike holidays in other sectors, the police force operates continuously.
Expressing support for the deployment, Abau Monica, a resident of Torit town, commended the government’s proactive measures. She urged the forces to adhere strictly to their job description, saying, “The government is taking positive steps because during the Christmas season, some individuals may contemplate criminal activities such as killings and theft. The law will protect us, and if the government sends these forces, they should carry out their duties responsibly without exacerbating the situation.”
Aldo Ojara, the paramount chief of Magwi, expressed satisfaction with the increased security measures. “I am genuinely pleased with the deployment of these forces, as the governor has taken steps to protect us civilians during Christmas. Without adequate protection, wrongdoers within the community may take advantage. Some individuals, such as thieves, may exploit the opportunity when people gather for Christmas, leaving their homes unattended. However, with protectors in place, both people and their properties will be safe,” Chief Ojara stated.
Elizabeth Iliha, another resident, anticipates a peaceful celebration and hopes citizens will celebrate the festival with love and harmony. “This is very good; it will help everyone. Each person should stay at home with love and peace. We expect nothing untoward to happen during our celebration. Our hope is that God will guide us, and the celebration will proceed peacefully, as evident in people busily preparing for it in their homes,” Iliha expressed.
