A one-and-half-year English language training targeting about a hundred public school teachers in Wau of Western Bahr el Ghazal State kicked off on Monday.
The program organized by the state ministry of education is aimed at improving the level of the English language for teachers in the state.
Governor Sarah Cleto, who inaugurated the program said the government will support the program till the end and urged teachers to take advantage of the training which will raise the standards of education in the state.
“There are 77 females and 23 males, we encourage you to take the training seriously because it will raise our standard of education. Our standard in the Arabic language is good and we need to take this training so that we can reach the standard of others in the English language.,” she said.
Governor Cleto added, “We as the government will support this training, and every program that we do is a program of peacebuilding. The education of our children is part of peacebuilding and we shall focus on education from the primary level and continue as we plan for 50 to 100 years to come.”
Radio Tamazuj caught up with some of the teachers enrolled in the program.
“I am very happy to attend the course. The teachers who are going to teach us, some of them taught us 30 years ago. If we attend this course we shall communicate with the children and with any visitors coming to the school,” said Julia Sebit.
Catharine John Abo said, “This teachers’ training is important because it will help us to teach in English and also come up with our lesson plans in English because most of us studied in Arabic and that is why we need more of such training.”
“Our hopes are very high, and we expect that there will be a success because most teachers in Western Bahr el Ghazal studied in Arabic. After I graduate from here, I will be able to provide education to my pupils in the best way,” Ramadhan Hussein said.
